Jene & I returned from Vermont Saturday night too late and too exhausted to run into the city for the Affordable Art Fair. Hope it was a success.
The S.P.A.C.E. gallery has resident artists as well as invited artists from New York. John Andrew Cipriano helped curate the show along with the project manager, Christy Mitchell, who designs lighting in the adjoining Conant Metal & Light. ( I have to admit it was difficult to walk out of the store without any of the hanging lights I fell in love with. Some are repurposed, others are designed with antique glass shades and some new blown glass etc.
We were first greeted by John Brickels, a creator in clay, who got on Shadow’s good side by offering treats. It was a pleasure meeting some of the very talented resident artists as well as the visiting artists from NY at the S.P.A.C.E. Gallery inBurlington, VT at this past Friday’s open studio art tour and exhibit. Jene and I enjoyed participating in the exhibit and visiting places where Jene’s childhood was spent at his grandmother’s in Middlebury. The house was swallowed up by the college years ago, but his memories of time spent will never be forgotten. One local artist Ann Street Bailey, a lovely woman and painter was engaged in joyful conversation about genealogy when Jene spoke of tracing his family history at the Sheldon Museum in Middlebury. We found the tombstones of civil war soldiers, Charles and Aaron Youtt along with wives, childrens and Jene did “rubbings” of the newest headstone… I have a project in mind utlilizing some of Beth Robinson’s fabulously eerie ‘strange dolls’. Wish I were better at remembering names, we chatted with a lot of people that night.
Getting ready for the opening…
This week NY Photo Festival in DUMBO (Down Under the Mahattan Bridge Overpass)section of Brooklyn starts on Wednesday, May 12 through the weekend. Jene will have the insiders tip of what he thinks will be of interest to me.
