Yesterday I attended a casting call directed by Ford Model, Monica Watkins, for a fundraising fashion show on June 20th to benefit Martine Longchamps’ Diakonos Orphanage in Haiti. I met Monica in December when Emmanuel Fremin Gallery hosted an exhibit/fundraiser for Diakonos and also GEMS. Talk about beauty inside and out. I couldn’t help but want to do what ever I could to help her cause.
It was just a casting call, as she was looking for models, some established and others looking to break into the fashion world came by to audition. A bunch of lovely young, beautiful women and men gave it a whirl. After a brief interview with Monica both Erin Gabriella Birmingham and I shot them outside of the DIVA restaurant, where the owner, Naci Yangin let us gather and take over between 3 – 4:30. Who wouldn’t want all these models milling around.
I’m not a fashion photographer but I did shoot some wannabes a while back at a friend’s studio. Hair and make-up artists, as well as a few up and coming designers and models crowded the kitchen and foyer until it was time for their close-ups. The theme was a spoof on The Devil Wears Prada.
It was a lot of fun and a lot of standing around waiting for the MUA’s to finish doing their magic. And I got a few nice shots so it was worth my time and effort.
Now back to the casting call, a very casual session to say the least. Erin Gabriella Birmingham was the photographer on record as she is working closely with Monica on the committee. Shot on the sidewalks of NY. Erin went to work with each person posing straight on, 3/4 and profile and a brief walk to see how they carry themselves.
I took a few shots trying not to get in the way. It was a different experience for me. Here’s a few of the images that I took, kind of behind the scenes.
